Permanent makeup (PMU), also known as cosmetic tattooing or micropigmentation, is the process of implanting colored pigment beneath the surface of the skin by means of a tiny, sterile needle to produce the appearance of cosmetic makeup or to enhance the natural features of the face.
The goal is a smudge-proof look for your eyebrows, eyeliner, lips, and more. Permanent makeup is meant to look like makeup!
While body tattoos are generally meant to boldly decorate the body, PMU is intended to be a natural-looking beauty enhancement.
Advanced techniques are utilized to ensure a soft, natural healed result, while specialized PMU pigments are formulated to stay in place and to gently fade over time. Additionally, each color must be meticulously matched to complement your skin's color and undertones.
Pain threshold levels vary from person to person, but every effort is made to ensure you remain comfortable throughout the procedure. Highly effective, FDA-compliant topical anesthetic products are used to numb you both before and during your procedure. It is very common to even fall asleep!
*Receiving the procedure during your menstrual cycle may increase your sensitivity.
Although each treatment is considered permanent, you can expect gradual fading over time. The degree of fading depends on a number of factors– including the color used (lighter colors fade faster), lifestyle (sun exposure), how much oil your skin produces, your immune system, and your skincare regimen. Gradual fading allows us to make changes to the color and shape over time as your natural coloration and facial changes occur.
You can expect to return for touch-ups every 1-3 years to keep the color looking fresh.
Typically, two initial treatments are needed, between 6-12 weeks apart. At the second session, we will assess the overall shape and color retention and make adjustments as necessary. Everyone heals differently and at different rates. If your PMU does not heal perfectly the first time, do not worry! We can always go darker or bolder, add more density, or tweak the shape at your next appointment.
Think of your second session like a second coat of nail-polish!
Absolutely! Like any beauty routine, PMU requires routine maintenance. If your existing shape and color are natural, we are happy to refresh it for you.
Sometimes, corrections are an option to improve the shape, color, or symmetry of previous PMU. In other cases, removal might be needed before proceeding. If you're not sure which route is best for you, just fill out our virtual consultation form!
*Please note that touch-up prices only apply to existing clients.
Every session of PMU is a bespoke creation, uniquely tailored to suit your skin tone, facial shape, and goals– ensuring it ages gracefully over time with you! We use only the highest quality pigments, sourced from pure ingredients and rigorously tested for color stability. While minimal color shifts may occur naturally in some cases, routine touch-ups ensure your PMU remains fresh as it naturally softens over time.
